Welcome To American Women In History

Dear Students, Teachers, Parents and Guardians,

Over the next few weeks, we as a class will be exploring women throughout American history. The women that are being examined are ones that changed the status quo for their time period. The reason that we are doing this is because I believe that students should have an understanding that they like these women are capable of making changes for their community. Students need to understand how important their voice is and how it can affect the society they live in.
I have decided that the lessons are going to be virtual ones and what that means is that the students and you if you so wish will join the wiki discussion page I have created. The wiki will be only available to students and parents/guardian and the lessons will be broken up into four sections. The first section will be exploring what a wiki is, how it operates and some of the language associated with it. I will also show the students what is appropriate language and what is not. The reason I have decided to do this, rather then a traditional unit plan is because I believe that students today need to be shown technology from as many different aspects as possible. The second part of the unit will be discussion links where the students will read about certain historical figures and then go to educational links to learn more. After they have discovered who the person was, they will write their opinions and other students can comment. The third part will be projects where the students will get out into the community see how people within their community have made changes. This is done because I believe that students need to know about their community especially if they want to make changes. Finally the fourth section will have the rubric where students will fully understand what is expected of them for the project and so that there is no confusion of what is needed. I will also be setting up a calendar in the website so that you as parents/guardians are able to follow what the class is doing and when. Thank you for allowing me to teach your children these important concepts if you have any questions pleas let me know.
Thank You,
Lauren Murray
