Sojourner Truth was born in Ulster County, New York in 1797. When she was born her name was Isabella Baumfree. Her last name was the name of one of the masters that owned her and her family. When she escaped slavery, she began working as a house servant in New York City but soon felt that she must take a sojourn or journey and speak the truth to people. From then on Isabelle Baumfree would be forever known as Sojourner Truth. There were three topics Sojourner Truth felt need to be discussed; women, blacks and the poor. Along her journey she came across people who called her names and tried to hurt and scare her away. Yet, Sojourner would keep walking and talking to people. By the end of her speeches both blacks and whites would be clapping. In 1850 she had dictated her life story titled The Narrative of Sojourner Truth. Sojourner Truth would share the platform was Frederic Douglass and meet President Lincoln. Sojourner Truth journeyed all over the country to talk to people and tell them what the truth was.
