For my capstone project, I will be focusing on women who looked at the status quo of their time and refused to accept it. I will discuss different women of American history staring from the early colonial period and ending in the 21 century. Women throughout American history have changed the way society deems what is the norm and it is important examine what changes they have made in our country. Another reason that I have chosen this as my capstone project is because I believe that it is vital that children see the many roles that women played throughout the centuries. Children need to understand that these women did this not for recognition or popularity but rather because they knew it was the right thing to do regardless if one or one hundred people were behind them.
Women throughout history have had to fight for their beliefs Due to the fact that men controlled almost every part of society, women were often told to listen rather then speak. Examining these women will bring their voices back to life and show students what was important them, their victories, their struggles. The voices of these women will be different and each will tell her own story. Yet, they all have a common thread and that is they made sure change occurred.
I will be covering this topic in the form of a wiki becacuse students are more electronic savy then they were five years ago and I believe it is important to show students how to opperate a website. I also belive students need to know how to access infomation that is correct and appropiate and this wiki will do that and more.Children need to learn about this because they need to see that one does not always have to accept things the way they are. By learning about this topic, children will not only understand different historical time periods but more importantly they will know how change can be brought about. Students need to know that they are capable of making a difference no matter how small it may be. Change begins with just an idea and these ideas can multiply and evolve but it always comes back to that basic concept. We need to teach children that they have the power within themselves to do this. Many times students will say that they have no power or no voice so why should they try to make changes. This capstone will show students how they like these women, they are capable of making changes if they just hold on to their ideas and keep true to themselves and their beliefs.
