Mary Harris Jones was born in Cork Ireland on May 1st 1830. Mary grew up in Ireland in a poor family. When Mary’s father had to flee due to him protesting the way the rich landlords treated people, he had his family meet him in Canada. Mary would go on to become a teacher in Toronto and then in Memphis, Tennessee. Early in her life she was met by sadness. Her husband and children died when a fever epidemic broke out and in 1871 she lost everything when the Great Chicago Fire broke out. Mary decided it was time to give a voice to the working class because she was tired of seeing then work long hours under dangerous conditions. Though the government turned a deaf ear to her cries, she continued, getting the textile, garment and coal miners to rally up. She called the miners her boys and they in return called her Mother. From then on she would be known as Mother Jones. Mother Jones worked all over the county protesting the working conditions and other labor issues. Though she never saw and laws change she never gave up.
