Mary E. Lease was born in Ridgway, Pennsylvania on September 11th, 1853. Mary Lease was known to many as the Patrick Henry in petticoats, she fought for economic change in this country. When Mary E. married Charles Lease, they lived in Kansas and like many other farmers they were struggling. Mary, like other farmers were fed up with the banks taking so much of their hard earned money and making it impossible to pay them back fully. Mary began to study the law and became angry. Why were the farmers suffering so much when the county was wealthy? Many thought like Mary and the People’s Party was established that eventually formed into Populism. Mary joined the party and was the most well known speaker for the party. Mary traveled all over the country telling people to rise up and take the country back. Though the party eventually faded, Mary’s words did not and would come back to haunt the county when the depression hit.
