Mary Ann Shadd Cary was born in Wilmington, Delaware on October 9th 1823. As a child, Mary was shown by her parents to do what you can to help. Many times runaway slaves would stay for a night in Mary’s house to seek coverage. Though Mary’s parents were free, Mary and her 12 other brothers and sisters were not allowed to go to school in their state and had to be taught by Quakers in Pennsylvania. Mary and other African Americans had to flee to Canada because due to the Fugitive Slave law, any slave caught heading North would be caught and sent back, though Mary Ann was free, due to her skin color she could still be captured. While up North Mary Ann started a paper called The Provincial Freedom which provided African Americans information how to start new lives in the North. She eventually came back to the States to raise money for her paper and later on in life became a recruiting officer for the Union Army. In 1883 she helped form the organization “The Colored Women’s Progressive Franchise Association”. Mary Ann Shadd Cary was a woman who fought to get the rights for all African Americans.
