Jane Addams was born Cedarville, Illinois on September 6th 1860. Jane grew up without a mother and was doted on by her father. Though as a child she was upset that not every one could live in a safe happy house like she did. After she graduated Rockford Female Seminary school she tried to be a doctor but due to her poor health could not. So Jane and her friend Ellen Gates Star went to London where they saw the Toynbee Hall, a settlement house where the poor could come and learn classes and programs to better their lives. When they returned home they established the Hull House in 1889. The Hull House gave programs such as citizenship and classes. Jane also worked on improving poor houses, child welfare and workmen’s compensation. In 1920, she formed the American Civil Liberties Union. Eleven year later she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Jane Addams fought for the poor and underrepresented and is someone who should always be honored.
