Emma Hart Willard was born on February 23rd 1787 in Berlin, Connecticut. Emma grew up in a household where boys and girls were treated equally when it came to education. During that time period, many thought that girls did not need to have a full education but Emma’s parents were different. This idea of equal learning stuck with Emma and she began teaching at a “female academy”. A female academy is where young girls went to school but only learned the basic necessities which during that time were French, sewing and some music. Unhappy with the system Emma traveled to New York in 1818 and got the Governor DeWitt Clinton to give her a charter to open a school for women. Though many thought this was a crazy idea, in 1821 the town of Troy, New York gave 4,000 dollars to build the Troy Female Seminary, where women could further their studies. Thanks to Emma Hart Willard, women all over the country were able to learn equally. Go to the link in the discussion page titled Emma Hart Willard and click on the link.
