Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New York City on October 11, 1884. Eleanor grew up in a privileged childhood but was very lonely. Both her parents died when she was young. Though lonely she would spend the rest of her life in the spotlight. Her uncle Theodore Roosevelt became president in 1905 and she eventually married her distant cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt. When Roosevelt developed polio in 1921, it was Eleanor who worked on his campaign. She gave speeches and helped New York schools. Eventually Roosevelt became president and Eleanor became the first lady. While first lady, Eleanor would hold press confesses and have a newspaper column to talk about her different social causes. When Roosevelt died, she worked as a U.N. represent for the United States and helped write the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For the rest of her life she wrote, spoke and traveled to promote human rights.
