Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was in Oswego, New York on November 26th, 1832. Dr. Edwards was one the first women to graduate from Medical School and wear pants. Dr. Edwards believed that women need to be able to walk freely and this was not done if they were looking like a doll. Dr. Edwards even wore one time a man’s dress suit complete with a bow tie and top hat. When the Civil War broke out, Dr. Edwards became the first female surgeon for the U.S. Army. Dr. Edwards would care for the soldiers on both sides and even worked as a spy. On November 11th, 1865 Andrew Jackson awarded her the Congressional Medal of Honor, which is the highest military award. After the war, she fought on women’s issues that included suffrage and the reforming how women were expected to dress. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a woman who went against the grain and no matter what stood for her beliefs.
